Hello NHL fans. Less than a month before the start of the season, which means it's time to sort out the main favorites of the NHL season, look at the quotes for the winners, which the TopSportie team will be happy to do. Let's go, 2022-2023 NHL season preview.
With the NHL Draft completed and most of the top free agents signed and a significant number of transfers made, it's time to look at the odds.
It makes sense that the reigning champion Colorado Avalanche is the top favorite to win in 2023. Let's look at the odds of the teams offered by bookmakers.

1. Colorado Avalanche - bookmakers evaluate the victory with a coefficient of 4.8 (+380).
Colorado is the reigning champion with leaders in their prime and a coach who has the full support of both management and the team. Of the star players, the Avalanche lost only Nazem Kadri but they updated the goalkeeper line and re-signed one of the heroes of the 2022 playoffs, Artturi Lehkonen. It is possible that Andre Burakovsky's departure to Seattle may affect the team's prospects but the Swede did not shine in the relegation games, got injured and became the culprit in the fact that he preferred to re-sign Lehkonen. But even despite these losses they are really the favorites and it's hard not to agree with that.
2-3. Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers - both teams are valued at the same odds of 9.5 (+850).
I personally have serious questions about Toronto. Surely the team has Matthews, Marner, not yet aged Tavares, Nylander and Banting. But there is a mess in the lower links, the loss of Mikheev clearly does not inspire confidence because Engvall, Kampf, middle-aged Spezza and Kashe are not the level of a team fighting for the Stanley Cup victory. Although often the dedication and teamwork of the players decide in the lower links so let's leave alone the attack of the "maple leafes" and move on to more obvious problems. And there are two of them. The first one is defense. Reilly and Lillegren are there but there are complaints about the rest: Mazzin, Hall, Brody and even more so Giordano are over 30, they can not please with performance and Sandin’s progress consists only in increasing the number of games played.
But this is not the main problem of Canadians! Everything is sad in the position of the goalkeeper. No matter how much we believe in Ilya Samsonov but the language does not dare to say that their tandem with Murray can lead the team to the Cup. And the management of Toronto, apparently really decided to entrust the season to these two unstable goalkeepers. If Campbell was in a fever during the regular season then about Samsonov and Murray in general, there is a feeling that they were invited in the expectation that one would be able to cover the unsuccessful bands of the other and vice versa. Therefore, the prospects for the Maple Leafs are vague.
Let's take a look at Florida. The Panthers experienced the most changes during the off-season. Huberdo, Giroud, Marchment, Wigar, Schiaro left the team, Vatrano and Tippett left the club for the deadline (who in addition to the draft picks was exchanged for Giroud who left in the offseason). As for the new famous players there is only Matthew Tkachuk. Panthers general manager Bill Zito managed to lose seven players of the main team and find a replacement for only one Huberdeau. In addition, the Panthers also fired the coach who led them to the President's Cup and appointed a completely controversial candidate, Paul Maurice to replace Andrew Brunett. In general, it is not known what the Florida management has started and what awaits us in the next two months before the start of the season but so far the team has clearly become an order of magnitude weaker. The bookmakers seem to be greatly overestimating Tampa's neighbors.
4. Carolina Hurricanes
Here the coefficient for winning is slightly more than 10 (11.12 depending on the bookmaker). The Hurricanes have long been among the contenders for the coveted trophy but they have not yet been among the favorites. On the one hand, it would be time already and the line-up has not changed much compared to the last (very successful) season. However the cup experience of the young and provocative "gang of idiots", as the team was nicknamed across the ocean is still not enough because the Carolinas did not get beyond the second round. Although the "Colorado" three seasons in a row before the long-awaited triumph flew out in the second round, so if there are questions for the "Hurricanes", then there are not so many of them like for example Toronto or Florida.
5.
Tampa Bay Lightning
But the participant of the last three Stanley Cup finals was rated very weakly 12/1 believing that the loss of Chamber and McDonagh is too serious a blow to the NHL vice-champions.
The lightning management took two good defenders to replace McDonagh in the person of Cole and Myers and also returned Vladislav Namestnikov to the club who will play for himself and for a partner, so you can’t blame the Russian for the lack of efficiency. And if Kucherov is less traumatic throughout the season then Tampa is able to aim at the President's Cup. Otherwise we can compare the Lightning with any team from the list above, I think they should be clearly in second place and the odds are too high here.
6-8. Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames, Vegas Golden Knights
The next three contenders are estimated approximately the same with coefficients from 16 to 18. Let's analyze each team separately again, starting with the "oil workers".
Oilers for once, surprise with a completely adequate transfer policy in the offseason. They don’t hand out staggeringly large contracts like the Nurse deal, they don’t let their players go to the free agency market, they make competent and targeted exchanges. All this led to the fact that Evander Kane agreed to remain in the McDavid team, having received not so exorbitant $ 5.125 million for four years. Edmonton re-signed Jesse Puljujärvi for a year and $3 million and Brett Kulak for four years for $2.75 million.
The goalkeeper Jack Campbell, who signed the agreement for five years and $ 5 million per season, Mattias Yanmark, and other hockey players came to the team. By retaining the top 6 and buffing the bottom two, Ken Holland is finally earning the accolade he hasn't received in a long time. In addition, the Edmonton general manager finally closed the goalkeeping issue in the team. Yes, Campbell is not the most consistent and strongest goalkeeper in the league, but he is certainly better than Smith and Koskinen. It turns out that the "oilmen" don't have too many problems, the only thing they see is the team's defense. Bouchard is progressing, but he is still far from the peak of his abilities, Barry is no longer showing his best numbers, Nurse is clearly not working out his big contract, and Cody Sisi is just a meme for the entire NHL. Perhaps Holland will still make some attempts to improve this line, but even without improvements, Edmonton looks like a much stronger team than last season.
Next up is Calgary. At first, the Canadians failed to persuade Johnny Gaudreau to re-sign the contract even for a fabulous $ 10.5 million per season, the club's main star left for Columbus. Then the "lights" faced the capriciousness of the team's second-ranked striker - Matthew Tkachuk, he had to look for options for an exchange. Talk began that the Flames were turning from a contender into a rebuilder in one offseason but then the Calgary still traded Tkachuk for Huberdo, Wigar, a first-round pick and also a promising prospect.
Yes, Huberdo is more likely to replace the creative Godreau in the team than the sniper Tkachuk but on the other hand another solid player appeared in the defense in the person of Wigar. More recently news broke that the Lights re-signed Andrew Manjapane for three years at $5.8 million per season, as well as Oliver Sheelington for two years at $2.5 million. Prior to this Nikita Zadorov received a new contract, Kevin Rooney came from Rangers. Among those who left the club in addition to the aforementioned stars, Kalle Jarnkrok and Eric Gudbranson appear. In general, the manager of the Flames Brad Treliving managed to save the face of a team that lost two leaders.
The list of top 8 bookmakers ended with "Vegas". In fact their appearance in the list of favorites was a real surprise. Aside from re-signing Reilly Smith for three years and Brett Howden for the season, the Knights did nothing at all during the off-season with a + sign for the roster. Yevgeny Dadonov drove off to Montreal, Max Pacioretti and Dylan Coglan were sent to Carolina to clear space under the ceiling in exchange for "future agreements." Jack Eichel can't find himself and his game, Robin Lehner is not getting younger, the attack is not becoming more powerful. In general, getting into this top is a huge advance for Aichel and the company.
In conclusion, I would like to present my alleged top 10 favorites for the upcoming season: Colorado Avalanche, Tampa Bay Lightning, Carolina Hurricanes, Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Florida Panthers, Calgary Flames, St. Louis Blues, Minnesota Wild.

Well, one more surprise, although I am not a fan of long-term bets but today I decided to make one and my choice fell on Edmonton, I really look forward to McDavid raising a well-deserved cup over his head. 100$ can give me 1800$ if Edmonton takes the Cup.
